Children as Safety Managers

Dr. Mike Boyes
BEd (Massey) MEd(PE)(W Aust) PhD (Otago) DipTchg
Mike is a lecturer in outdoor education at the School of Physical Education, University of Otago. Mike has a very long history of involvement in outdoor education, intially from a teaching background and more recently in teacher education as The Head of Physical Education at the Dunedin College of Education. He holds a number of outdoor instructor qualifications although his more recent interests are in the theory and research side of outdoor education. His current research projects have focused safety mangement for children, outdoor leadership decision making and the outdoor recreation patterns of Danish and New Zealand tertiary students.

Mike's session presented data from the National Education Monitoring Project (NEMP) 1998, where Year four and Year eight children identified risks, dangers and management strategies applied to two outdoor learning situations. The presentation examines the feasibility and practicalities of children being partners in the safety management process.
