Matt Barker

A presentation of the current British Canoe Union’s White Water Safety and Rescue course. The course content expanded upon including aspects of leadership, throwlines, chest harness, incident management and the equipment used and carried today.
The presentation looked at where a qualification of this type should fit into the New Zealand outdoor pursuits qualification structure;
Should it be a prerequisite or an endorsement?

Biographical Sketch
Matt Barker has been coaching white water kayaking for nearly 20 years. He has worked throughout Britain and Europe and was a member of the 12 strong British Canoe Union team developing the current course. He moved to New Zealand in 1999 to take up an appointment as senior lecturer at Auckland University of Technology. He holds a Coach Level 5, the BCU’s highest award.
