Outdoor Education in New Zealand, 1996 – 2000
Grant Davidson
Grant has been Director
of the Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre (OPC)
since 1990 and sees his role as keeping OPC on track so that
it is
relevant
in
today's
world
and exists
for
tomorrow's
children. Grant is currently Deputy Chair of Outdoors New
Zealand and is a Board member for the Sport Fitness and
Recreation Industry Training Organisation (SFRITO).
He is recognised internationally for his expertise in outdoor
risk management theory and application. At present he is
working to complete his Doctorate through Waikato University
part time.
Grant is a trained teacher and
before taking on a management role, instructed at OPC and
a range of outdoor centres in the UK and North America.
He has a Masters of Outdoor Education from the University
of Minnesota, BSc Physics, Diploma of Sport and Recreation,
Diploma of Teaching, Certificate of Teaching, NZOIA Bush
II, Mountain II, Rock II, Kayak II, Outdoor Safety Instructor
and is a former NZOIA Assessor in all of these disciplines.
Grant is currently undertaking research into the root causes of serious outdoor
accidents in New Zealand. As part of that research he has compiled a database
of a large number of outdoor accidents. In this presentation Grant looked
at
whether that data supports various myths about the outdoor education industry
and its accidents.
